Enrolling your child in school in Australia

How public school enrolment works, and school fees for temporary visa holders in each state.

In short

Government (public) schools take children from their local area and are free for citizens and permanent residents, but families on many temporary visas pay fees. Private schools, including religious schools, run their own enrolments and set their own fees.

Rules in each state and territory

Tap your state to see its rules.

South Australia

Decide between a government school and a private school, then contact them early. Places and dates vary.

Government school

Find your zone ↗ How enrolment works ↗ New Arrivals Program ↗

Find your zoned school from your home address. You can apply to other schools, but offers depend on places. Primary applications usually open before the end of term 2.

Private school (Islamic, Catholic, independent)

Playford College ↗ Australian Islamic College Adelaide ↗ Catholic Education SA ↗

Private schools run their own applications and set their own fees, so contact them directly. Example: Playford College in Elizabeth is an Islamic school for Foundation to Year 12 that welcomes children of all faiths. Phone (08) 8252 3044. Its website offers tours and an enrolment page. Enrolment steps and fees are not listed here, so ask the school.

Before you pay: safety checks

  • On a 482 visa with a family income over $78,000, the Department for Education says you pay a student fee at government schools in greater Adelaide. For 2027 it lists up to $7,000 per primary student and $8,200 per high school student, with discounts for several children or lower income
  • The page says the fee does not apply at non-government schools, which charge their own fees
  • Other temporary visa types: check the Department's visa lookup
  • You must register each year while on a 482 visa
